Over time, this leads to more consistent results because simple, repeatable steps replace improvisation.”

What AI Literacy Actually Means 

AI literacy does not require engineering expertise. It’s about having the confidence and judgment to work with AI in real-world situations. At its core, AI literacy rests on three connected abilities. 
 
1) Understanding how AI works at a high level: what it can do, how it learns from data, and where its limitations lie. 
 
2) Practically engaging with AI by using it in everyday work: asking clear questions, refining prompts, building workflows, and applying AI to real problems. 

3) Critically engaging with AI outputs: evaluating accuracy, spotting bias, and knowing when human judgment is needed. 
 
Together, these three abilities allow people to use AI effectively and responsibly, regardless of their technical background. 

And according to Ayaz, “the most common sign of not being AI literate is assuming that a polished AI response means that the work is finished. Many professionals confuse ‘AI gave me an answer’ with ‘this is correct and ready to use.’ Verification, context checks, and basic testing often get skipped, which leads to work that sounds confident but is subtly wrong or misaligned with the real goal.” 

Essentially, people need to know what AI is good at, what can go wrong, and how to use it responsibly. This includes awareness of privacy, data sources, and potential bias: an essential part of modern work as organizations navigate ethical considerations around AI. It also includes the ability to create with AI — asking good questions, building workflows, refining prompts, and using these systems for real, applied problem-solving. 
 

4 Pillars of AI Literacy 

The following pillars (adapted from the World Economic Forum’s AI Literacy Framework) represent what professionals need in their day-to-day roles in order to strengthen problem-solving, collaboration, and trust across industries. 
 

1. Interacting with AI 

This is the foundation of literacy: prompting, asking clear questions, and evaluating the quality of responses. People learn how to steer an AI system rather than simply accept whatever it produces. They recognize when something looks inaccurate, incomplete or biased: a key part of using AI safely. 

2. Creating with AI 

Once interaction becomes natural, people begin using AI to write, research, analyze, plan, or design. AI automation helps teams shift their time from repetitive tasks toward more meaningful work. This ability to create with AI accelerates workflows, improves speed, and broadens creative and analytical capacity. 

Ayaz believes that “people who create real value with AI treat it as a workflow tool, not a novelty. They start with a concrete outcome — saving time, reducing errors, or improving quality — and design a repeatable process around that goal. They know which tasks to delegate to AI, like drafting or structuring, and which require human judgment, including decisions, nuance, and accountability. They also track impact, even informally, so improvements stay tangible.” 

3. Managing AI 

Management is about responsible use. It includes understanding data privacy, governance, and the ethical risks that come with working with intelligent systems. AI literacy helps individuals spot bias, question outputs, and think critically about how decisions are shaped by underlying data. 

4. Designing with AI (Even If You’re Not Technical) 

Designing with AI doesn’t mean “creating marketing visuals” — it means understanding problems well enough to collaborate with technical teams on real work and production. It allows people to map real-world challenges to AI-supported solutions and think in systems. This is increasingly essential for modern organizations because it supports strategic transformation at every level.

It’s estimated that about 170 million new jobs will be created globally by 2030, driven largely by technological change, including AI — even as other roles are displaced. This translates into a net increase of around 78 million jobs across industries.

“The most underestimated risk is unintentionally exposing sensitive information,” according to Ayaz. “Outside of technical roles, people often paste client data, internal plans, or confidential documents into AI tools without considering where that information might go or how it could be retained. Another overlooked risk is quiet inaccuracy — outputs that sound reasonable and get reused without checks. When those errors surface, they damage trust because they appear as the professional’s mistake, not the tool’s.”

How to Build AI Literacy (A Practical Roadmap) 

AI literacy typically develops through four stages. 

  1. Interaction: Learning how to prompt well, question outputs and build confidence. 
  1. Creation: Using AI for writing, analysis, design, research, or planning.
  1. Management: Understanding privacy, governance, data quality, and ethical implications. 
  1. Design: Mapping business problems to AI-supported solutions and collaborating with technical teams. 

If you feel like you’re already late; don’t worry, Ayaz’ recommendation is to now start by “focusing on one task you do every week and make it noticeably faster with AI. Choose something high-frequency, like drafting emails, summarizing meetings, or turning rough notes into a clean document. Create a simple prompt template and a short review checklist so results stay consistent and safe. Progress comes from reliable habits, not from chasing every new tool.”
